NEW DELHI: Chinese President Hu Jintao may not address a joint sitting of Parliament during his visit to India.

After Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon called on Communist Party of India General Secretary AB Bardhan at the party headquarters here, the latter told reporters, "It seems from conversation that the itinerary of the Chinese President does not have the scope for addressing Parliament."

While Menon described the 45-minute meeting as "a courtesy call", Bardhan said the Indo-US nuclear deal in the aftermath of US election results and India's relations with Pakistan and Bangladesh came up for discussion.

On the party's stand on the Indo-US nuclear deal, the CPI leader said, "Our stand is well known to everyone. Do you think I need to tell the foreign secretary again?"

Menon had met Communist Party of India (Marxists) General Secretary Prakash Karat immediately after assuming office.
