West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Smith will not forget his recent trip to Mumbai in a hurry. And for all the wrong reasons. Smith lost valuables worth nearly Rs1 lakh on Saturday. The 23-year-old cricketer approached the Bhoiwada police station to lodge a complaint about the missing ornaments. The police are currently investigating the case.

Smith arrived in Mumbai with the rest of the West Indian squad on Friday, as the team was slated to play Australia in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in Mumbai on Sunday. The team was put up at the Taj President in Cuffe Parade. But on November 4, they were shifted to the ITC Central, Parel, where Smith realised that he had misplaced his pouch containing gold ornaments.

“We have registered a missing complainant since he does not remember where he exactly misplaced his pouch. He doubts that it could have been misplaced during his journey from Jaipur to Mumbai or while the team was shuttling between hotels in Mumbai,” said police inspector Suresh Patil, the investigation officer of the case. In a police statement he said: “I had kept a gold bracelet and a chain in a black pouch. On Saturday night, I realised that it was missing. The gold ornaments must be about 90 grams in weight.”

The team’s media manager Imran Khan, however, said, “I don’t know about it. It is unfortunate. The team was busy preparing for the finals.”
