LAS VEGAS, Nevada: American Floyd Mayweather kept his undefeated record intact by overpowering Carlos Baldomir to claim the World Boxing Council welterweight title on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Mayweather took a unanimous decision from the Argentine champion by winning on a three judges scorecards, 120-108, 120-108, 118-110.

"I got a victory under any circumstances," Mayweather said. "I can win under any circumstances."

Mayweather was fighting without his trainer-uncle Roger Mayweather who is serving a six-month sentence for battery with bodily harm.

Roger had his trainer license revoked by Nevada officials for his role in a ring brawl during Mayweather's victory over Zab Judah in April.

Mayweather, who was carried into the ring on a four-poster pedestal wearing a gladiator costume, showed why he was a heavy favourite going into the bout as he opened cuts on Baldomir's nose and eye in the opening round.

Mayweather (37-0, 24 KOs) is considered by some to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He used a hit-and-run style to pepper Baldomir in the middle of the ring.

The strategy was effective in scoring points with the judges but didn't impress some in the crowd who were looking for a knockout and booed in the 12th round.

Mayweather said he injured his right hand in the sixth round. Earlier in the fight he complained to his corner about Baldomir's laboured style. "He's awkward," Mayweather said.

It was the first loss in seven years for Baldomir who drops to 43-10 with six draws and 24 KOs.

On the undercard, Mexico's Orlando Salido won a unanimous decision over American Robert Guerrero to claim the International Boxing Federation featherweight title.

Salido landed 284 of 460 total punches against Guerrero, who was making his first defence of the title.

All three judges scored the fight in favour of Salido, 115-113, 117-111, 118-110.    In another undercard bout, New Zealand's Santos Pakau was stopped by unbeaten Paul Williams in the sixth round of their one-sided welterweight bout.
