6 CPM men sentenced to life for murder

A court here on Friday sentenced six Communist Party of India-Marxists activists to rigorous imprisonment for life in connection with the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party worker.

KANNUR: A court here on Friday sentenced six Communist Party of India-Marxists activists to rigorous imprisonment for life in connection with the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party worker at his residence near Kuthuparamba in Kannur district in December 2000.
 
The Thalassery Additional District Sessions Court (fasttrack) Judge AA Vijayan sentenced the six under Indian Penal Code Section 302 (murder) and slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 each on them.
 
The judge said the convicts would have to undergo rigorous for three more years if they failed to pay the fine.
 
The court also sentenced them to rigorous imprisonment for varying periods ranging from six months to seven years and also imposed a fine of rs 5,000 each. Failing to pay the amount would attract RI for one more year under Section 449 of the IPC (trespass with an intention to commit murder).
 
Under the Explosives Substances Act, the court sentenced the CPM workers to five years RI and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each. The convicts would have to undergo RI for two more years if they did not pay the amount.
 
However, all sentences will run concurrently, the judge said.
 
The court, on Wednesday last, had found them guilty of committing the murder while acquitting three others for want of evidence.
 
The court also ordered that the Rs 1 lakh fine amount received from the culprits be paid to the nearest relatives of the murdered BJP worker.
 
The incident had occurred around 10.30 pm on December 3, 2000 when the BJP activist was stabbed to death inside his Vattipram residence.
