WASHINGTON: Indian Americans figure among winners of the first National Ethnic Media awards announced by New America Media, the country's first and largest association of ethnic media.
Close to 600 ethnic media practitioners competed in 14 categories, from Investigative Journalism to Best Community Talk Show for the awards honouring the sector's contributions to American journalism, the association said in San Francisco on Thursday.
"Hurricane Katrina and immigration rights dominated news in ethnic media over the last year," said awards coordinator Sandip Roy. "Each of these complex stories reflects the ethnic media's unique role as an advocacy voice, as well as a vital source of news and information for their audiences."
Winners confound the conventional view of ethnic media as operating in a cultural silo. This year's winners demonstrate ethnic media's role in building understanding between America's ethnic communities while serving their communities' information needs, he said.
The New America Media awards will be presented in Washington DC on November 14.
Indian American winners include:
International Affairs: Rupali Ghosh, SAMAR Magazine, Indentured in Singapore's Little India.
Covering a Multi-Ethnic Society: Lavina Melwani, Little India (New York), The Colors of Desi.
Runners-Up: Best Investigative/In Depth English: Viji Sundaram, India West (San Leandro, California), Women Innocent Victims of AIDS.
Women's Issues: Radhika Kumar, India Currents (San Jose, California), A Window Opens Doors.
English Honorable Mention: Sujeet Rajan, The Indian Express (New York), Living in America.
