MOHALI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has finally realised that seniority has nothing to do with performance. Given the way the team caved in during the Champions Trophy, the board has decided that it just might be better to pay the players according to what they do on the field.

Under the new scheme, each player will be paid a fixed match fee and an incentive that will be based not just on the performance in individual matches but on the consistency of performance.

The moolah will be divided on the recommendation of a three-member panel. Dilip Vengsarkar, chairman of selectors, Greg Chappell, team coach, and a BCCI official will constitute this committee. The precise incentive formula will also be decided by the committee.

But the central contracts that assure players of a minimum amount of money according to the three grades that they figure in will not be done away with. The new clauses will only add to the total sum that players.

As of now, close to 15 per cent of the BCCI’s revenue goes to the players. The performance incentive is slated to increase this figure. Currently, contracted players get Rs2.5 lakh for a Test and Rs1.6 lakh for an ODI.

BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah confirmed that a performance-based pay structure is on the anvil. “Most board members feel there should be some difference in payment for a match-winner and a non-performer,” he said.

Shah said senior BCCI members — N Srinivasan, IS Bindra, Shashank Manohar, and he — will discuss the issue on November 2 and 3.

At present, there are 19 players in three categories with retainerships of Rs50 lakh, Rs35 lakh, and Rs20 lakh.

The new contracts will be anno-unced before the team leaves for South Africa and will be implemented with retrospective effect from October 1.

Money matters: Contracted players get Rs2.5 lakh per Test, Rs1.6 lakh per ODI.

Non-contracted players get Rs3.2 lakh per Test, Rs2.2 lakh per ODI.
