THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The indefinite strike by private bus and truck owners in Kerala, against installation of speed governors in vehicles, began on Monday causing severe hardship to people who rely on private buses for commuting.

Reports from across the state said the response to the strike was total with private buses staying off the road in all places.

The halt in truck movement affected trading in major towns.

The strike call was given by Joint Council of Bus and Truck Owners against the government orders making installation of speed governors mandatory, on the basis of a Supreme Court directive in this regard.

The Action Council had argued that it would be impractical and unfair to implement the order only for vehicles registered in Kerala.

Though the government had promised to bring in an ordinance to overcome the Supreme Court order, the bus and truck owners had stuck to their stand to go ahead with the stir.
