NEW DELHI: Personnel of the paramilitary forces would be given a Rs10 lakh life and disability insurance cover in addition to the Rs three lakh they get in case of death or disability while performing their duty.

The announcement was made by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil at the CRPF’s 67th Raising Day celebrations on Saturday.

A CRPF spokesman said the CRPF, which had already implemented the decision to insure each jawan for Rs10 lakh by deducting a nominal amount from his salary, would now have an insurance cover of Rs23 lakh.

Patil, while acknowledging the role of the CRPF in maintaining the internal security of the nation, said the needs of the soldiers and their families must be catered to by the society.

He assured that all the pending proposals of CRPF for housing and infrastructure would be cleared by the UPA government and also announced a one-time grant of Rs one crore for setting up of a group housing society of CRPF personnel.

Lauding the role of women in the force, Patil expressed confidence that the ‘all-women’ company of CRPF women that is going on a peacekeeping mission to Liberia, would once again prove successful.

CRPF Director General J K Sinha, speaking on the occasion, said the force had notched up some notable successes against terrorists and insurgents this year.

He said this was made possible due to the stress on intelligence gathering and launching of proactive operations.

He also highlighted the varied role of the force since independence, the sacrifices made during the Chinese and Pakistani aggressions and the valour shown during the terror attack on Parliament and at Ayodhya.
