Traders in Delhi will begin their three-day bandh from Monday, an event which has caused a lot of strain to the common man and police alike.

With support pouring in from all quarters to make the bandh a success, the traders are expected to gherao the state assembly which will commence its winter session from Monday as well. The police are, thus, in a state of alert and have appealed to the common man to maintain calm and order during the bandh duration.

Delhi Commissioner KK Paul has said that though the police are prepared for any untoward incident, the citizens also need to maintain law and order and should not willfully cause any damage to public property.

The bandh was called to protest the government’s decision to go ahead with the sealings. However, the MCD had filed a submission to the monitoring committee appointed by the Supreme Court on Saturday, which clearly stated that sealings cannot begin in the capital.

They have cited the law and order condition and the prevailing tension in the city as the major factors for not undertaking sealings.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi also met traders and assured them that her party and the UPA government were with them and would do everything possible to protect their interests.

Already the state congress, BJP and other parties have pledged support to the bandh.

Meanwhile, traders have clarified that all essential items shops along with milk and vegetable vendors will remain open, so as to not inconvenience the common man. Rumors are also rife that schools will remain closed, causing a lot of strain to the common man. The police has alerted against believing rumors. Some schools have decided to remain shut while the others say that the prerogative of sending their child to school lies with the parents.

A similar bandh by Delhi traders on September 20 witnessed violent scenes, claiming five lives and injuring about 100. Public property worth lakhs of rupees was also damaged during the one-day protest then.

Schools to remain open

The Delhi government announced  that all its schools will remain open on Monday. In a statement, it said all government schools in Delhi will remain open on October 30. The clarification of the state Education Department comes a day after Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had said that all schools in the capital will remain closed on Monday as a precautionary measure in the wake of three-day bandh called by the traders.
