NY bus terminal evacuated on bomb threat

Police evacuated half of New York's busiest bus terminal on Monday and arrested an emotionally disturbed man who claimed to have a bomb on a bus, officials said.

NEW YORK: Police evacuated half of New York's busiest bus terminal on Monday and arrested an emotionally disturbed man who claimed to have a bomb on a bus, officials said.

Police detained a 28-year-old man who did not get off a bus once it arrived in at New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal from Scranton, Pennsylvania, a police source at the scene said.

Officers were searching the bus and had yet to reopen the south wing of the terminal, the police source said, declining to be identified. The north wing remained open.

“There is a man on a bus claiming to have a bomb but there''s no one else on the bus,” a police spokeswoman said before the arrest.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan near Times Square serves 200,000 passengers a day, making it what the Port Authority calls the busiest bus terminal in the world.

“Police are dealing with what we believe to be an emotionally distressed individual within the terminal on a bus,” said Marc Lavorgna, a spokesman for the Port Authority.

Lavorgna could not provide details about what the man said.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey owns and operates airports, bridges, tunnels and other transportation infrastructure in the New York metropolitan area.

It owns the World Trade Center site that was attacked twice, first by truck bomb in 1993 and again on Sept. 11, 2001.

Security experts consider many of its properties to be potential soft targets for any new attack on the city.
