There is some good news for students ‘suffering’ from examination fever. The University of Mumbai’s two institutes have decided to do away with the conventional examination pattern and introduce the credit-based pattern.

The Mumbai University’s Garware Institute of Career Development and the Department of Economics were recently granted academic autonomy by the state government and University Grants Commission (UGC). Scrapping the the age-old examination pattern was the first thing the two institutes did.

The University’s department of Economics has become the first institute to provide undergraduate and postgraduate degrees through the credit-based examination pattern.

Earlier, the institutes were following the conventional examination pattern whereby students had to undergo two elaborate semesters within a gap of six months each.

Dean of the Department of Economics, Abhay Pethe said through the credit-based system, students will be evaluated on the basis of continuous internal assessment for each degree course. Students will be evaluated on the basis of the credits awarded through internal assessments and small semesters conducted throughout the academic year.

“Credit-based examination pattern also gives an opportunity to keep a track of students engaged in the practice of bunking their regular lectures. To introduce the credit-based examination pattern, we have to make structural changes in the syllabus. However, the autonomous status will help us to introduce these changes, as we will have an independent board of studies and academic council. But the degrees will be conferred by the University of Mumbai,” said Pethe.

Meanwhile, the Garware Institute of Career Development, known for conducting various postgraduate diploma and certificate courses, has decided to introduce new courses like supply chain management.

“We have also decided to modify the existing courses. Our institute is looking forward to more funding from various organisations. The credit-based examination will be functional from the current year,” said Arun Shirsagar, director of the Garware Institute of Career Development.
