NEW DELHI: Nearly a month after the murder of an Indian student in St Petersburg in a suspected racial attack, Russia has stepped up security at the medical college where several other Indians are studying.

The security at Mechnikov Medical Academy was increased after India took up with Russian authorities the matter of safety of its nationals in view of stabbing of Nitesh Kumar Singh, final year medical student, on September 24.

Singh was the second Indian student of the Academy to be attacked in six months.
“Some preliminary steps seem to have been initiated in improving security conditions at the Mechnikov Medical Academy," an External Affairs Ministry official said.

India feels that the problem of attacks on non-White foreign students in Russia would require a "more comprehensive approach" by the Russian authorities.

There have been several incidents of violent attacks on Indian and foreign students in different parts of the Russian Federation by extremist groups. St Petersburg accounts for a third of all such attacks.

Singh was stabbed outside his hostel by eight masked people. Earlier in April, another Indian student of the Academy Kishore Kumar Anjangi was also attacked but survived.

The killing had triggered large-scale protests by Indian students in St Petersburg. The Indian Consulate took up with the Russian authorities the issue of safety of Indian nationals after Singh's murder and was assured of steps to improve their security.

The Indian Embassy in Russia has issued an advisory to students to take adequate precautions for their personal security, particularly during outdoor movements.
