KARACHI: Inzamam-ul Haq's tenure as captain will come up for review after the home series against the West Indies, Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Nasim Ashraf has said.
Ashraf, who took over from Shaharyar Khan just before the onging Champions Trophy, said a decision on who would captain the team for the tour of South Africa and the World Cup would be taken after consulting the selectors and taking into account form and fitness of a player.
"We have named Inzamam-ul-Haq as captain for the West Indies series according to an old agreement but after that series the captaincy would be reviewed," he said.
"While it is good to have stability in the team and captaincy but there has to be a balance between stability and reliance," he said.
Inzamam is serving a four-ODI ban for bringing the game into disrepute by causing first-ever forfeiture in the 129-year Test history at the Oval.
On his decision to convince Younis Khan to take back the captaincy for the Champions Trophy in India just a day after he had relinquished it, Ashraf said that he kept the team's interest in mind.
"Younis is a naturally gifted leader and he can lift the team on the field. We were already missing Inzamam, who is a pillar of strength in our batting and I didn't want the team in disarray in the tournament."
"I consider Inzamam as a batsman in the same class or perhaps better than Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara but he has not got the same attention in the media as them," Ashraf said.
Ashraf also said that the PCB was not in a position to take the decisions before the World Cup and saw coach Bob Woolmer continuing till than.
Woolmer, the former England player has faced some problems since the resignation of Shaharyar who had brought him in 2004 despite wide public disapproval.
It is no secret that Woolmer is not popular among some senior officials of the Board and in fact a source said that the Board was now carrying out an audit into the number of unauthorised holidays he had taken over and above those allowed in his contract.
Ashraf announced the Board would submit its new constitution by November 1 to President Pervez Musharraf, who is chief patron of the Board.
"I believe the Board should be run on corporate lines and professionally but there should also be representation of people who run cricket at the grass root level in their regions and associations," he said.
"We will have a balance of a democratically elected council and a professional CEO. We have appointed a reputed audit company - Fergusons - to do head hunting for a CEO for us and he must be of Pakistani origin. He will definitely reduce the powers of the chairman which is in line with my thinking that no one person should have arbitrary powers to take decisions without any check or balance."
The PCB has been run on ad-hoc basis since mid 1999 with the constitution effectively suspended with all key appointments being made directly by the President.
