Gibbs to meet Indian police

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs will meet with Indian police for questioning over his involvement in the Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandal.

Since 2000 Gibbs has declined to tour India over fears of being detained by police.

South Africa coach Mickey Arthur said on Wednesday Gibbs would hold a brief meeting with police on arrival in Delhi before joining up with the South Africa squad for the ICC Champions Trophy.

“Herschelle will fly on the night of October 10 straight to Delhi and will be accompanied by his lawyer,” Arthur said.

“He has an appointment with KK Paul (the Indian policeman leading the match-fixing investigation), which we are led to believe will take an hour-and-a-half. He will then join the rest of the team in Mumbai ahead of the practice game on the 13th.

“His legal team has it all under control, Herschelle just has to get through it all, but I fully expect him to be fine. He's really determined to have a big season.”

Six years ago, Gibbs was fined and suspended for six months after admitting he agreed to under-perform in a one-day international against India in exchange for money.

The offer was relayed to him by then South African captain Cronje who was subsequently banned from cricket for life.

The rest of the South African team left Johannesburg on Wednesday for India.

They play New Zealand in their opening game on October 16.
