NEW DELHI: Most people would give anything to live in Delhi’s Lutyen’s Zone. Not if it’s 7, Tughlaq Lane. The VIP bungalow has acquired the ‘haunted house’ soubriquet after several of its occupants either passed away or contracted cancer soon after moving into the house.

Allotted to Supreme Court judges, the bungalow has now been deserted for the last few months because there are no takers for it.

The last person to occupy the place was Justice RV Ravindran, whose in-laws passed away soon after they occupied the house. Later, his daughter contracted cancer of the tongue.

A source close to one of the previous occupants said, “One does not want to believe that there could be a bad omen, but look at the tragedies that its occupants have faced after they moved in. Many have tried to fight the reputation that the house has acquired, but they have run into tragedy. It’s almost eerie.”

Justice M Srinivasan was amongst those who had resisted the rumours and decided to move into 7 Tughlaq. However, he died of cancer after moving in. The current Chief Justice of India, Y K Sabharwal, who had a stint at 7 Tughlaq, lost his wife during his stay in the house. Justice Ashok Bhan discovered after moving into the house that his wife had contracted cancer and moved out promptly.

“There have been many others who have been offered the house but have declined because of the spooky history associated with it. Some have tried making changes such as closing a particular room after being guided by Vastu experts, but nothing seems to have cast off the evil spell,” says a chowkidar of a neighboring house.

Now the house, despite its upmarket location, lies uninhabited.
