Not selecting Ganguly is the right thing: Rashid Latif

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif believes the Indian selectors have done the right thing by not considering former skipper Sourav Ganguly for the Champions Trophy, which India hosts in October-November.

"I think they are following a pattern and they have discovered some exciting young players like Suresh Raina. I think it is time for Sourav to move on and accept he can't play for India again," Latif said.

Ganguly, India's most successful Test skipper ever, was on Sunday left out of a 14-member squad for the prestigious one-day tournament after being picked earlier among 30 probables.

However, Latif said the selectors must not ignore Anil Kumble from the one-dayers provided he was fit.

"I think they are making a big mistake by ignoring Kumble from their one-day squad. If they want to win the World Cup they need a bowler of his calibre and experience in the side," Latif said.

The 35-year-old Kumble is India's most successful bowler but had to end a county stint early this month with Surrey due to a shoulder problem.

"The sort of conditions they have in the West Indies I have no doubt Kumble must be in the Indian squad for the World Cup. I hope he gets his chance later on. Spinners will play a big role in the tournament," said Latif who played 37 Tests and 166 one-day internationals.
