NEW DELHI: It’s day two at the WLIFW and already we are on to abbreviations. Buyers Tina Tahiliani (Ensemble), Yashodra Shroff(FFolio, Bangalore) and many others took a sabbatical through the morning, while the lesser mortals showcased their creations.

Despite their absence, Falguni and Shane, and Ayesha Depala put up great collections, the one flamboyant, sexy and eye catching, the other calm, sedate and oh so elegant. Both also used handwork effectively, in true Indian tradition.  Fresh faced sisters, Gauri and Nainika got themselves a standing ovation from one quarter of the audience (family friends or real buyers?) for their very classy and well finished line of leisure and evening wear inspired by the best of Hollywood. Think Audrey H, Grace Kelly, and Rita Hayworth.

As for the rest, there were flashes... Manav Gangwani’s acssessories stole the show from his collection, while Bobby and Manju Grover’s jewellery line spoke louder than the surface ornamentation on their clothes. Ariaya and Jatin Verma who opened the day’s proceedings got a raw deal. While the Wills Quiz conducted preceeding their event by Siddharth Basu was reasonably packed, the tent was barely full for their show.

The last two shows of the day were a study in contrast.

Ashima and Leena started off with a confused message, their whites and florals not really making any impact. But somewhere towards the end, they found their metier, and sent out a series of black and dull gold outfits that could make the grade at any store.  Pretty handwork, deft blending of matte with shine, and clean, flowing silhouettes marked this section of their offering. Essentially evening wear, of course, especially in the heat of summer.

In sharp contrast, Shantanu and Nikhil upheld their track record of coming up with a very appealing, wearable line. Upping the white and pastels theme to silk from the cotton and voiles that most other designers had preferred till then, S and N used cream  silk jacquards, and sent out cuffed at the knee, restricting dresses that most women in the audience vowed they would never wear, but which nonetheless looked lovely on ramp.

Other favoured fabrics included shot silk (once a hot favourite, of the older generation), and satin silk.  Matching silk bags of various sizes with straps in leather, and flat closed shoes in the same fabric completed the ensembles . Very natty! The makeup was pale to the point of  being anaemic, with pale pink lips and a soft blush that set off the white under the eyes. And for all those who have inherited their Mamma’s Kanjeevarams and do not want to drape themselves, S and N have the perfect solution, in the line of gold flecked one piece ensembles they put on ramp.

A lovely touch, which is again part of an ongoing trend this season ( 2 days old as of now) is the golden sash. They had many waists clenched in gold, and Deepika Padukone even sported a bejewelled  cloth waistband. And the finale crystal studded long jacket sported by Jesse was a real stunner! Every woman there must have wanted to own one!
