NEW DELHI: Two people suffered minor burn injuries when a major fire broke out in an electronic goods market in the capital's busy commercial area of Chandni Chowk on Saturday evening.

The fire broke out shortly after 4 PM and soon engulfed several multi-storey buildings housing shops and offices in Bhagirath Place behind Lajpat Rai market in Central Delhi, fire brigade officials said.

Nearly 30 fire tenders reached the scene immediately and began an operation to put off the blaze and to rescue those people trapped inside the buildings, situated in narrow lanes of the electronic market, one of the biggest in Asia.

Several people were rescued through windows after breaking glass panes as entrances to the buildings were covered with smoke, making it impossible for fire fighters to enter, they said.

However, no fatalities were reported so far and the cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.

The injured has been taken to Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital.

Fire office said the blaze has been put off, but according to eyewitnesses smoke could be seen billowing from the buildings.
