New Delhi: The quotas in higher and technical educational institutions may not last for years as in the case of jobs in government. Highly-placed sources in the government said that there are plans to review the quotas and its affect after five years.

The proposed legislation, which will be introduced in the Parliament on Friday, envisages having a time-frame to review the same.

The Oversight Committee, constituted to prepare the roadmap for the implementation of quotas, too will fix five years as the minimum period for review of these quotas in its final report, it is learnt.

Even the union Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Arjun Singh had hinted towards this. “Nothing is for ever. Policies need to be reviewed after a certain period and quotas are no different,” Singh had told this correspondent few days back.

Meanwhile, despite strong opposition from the Left, it is the children of rich and affluent among Other Backward Classes (OBC), who will benefit most from the quotas after the Cabinet decided to include creamy layer among the beneficiaries.
