UDAIPIR: Incessant rains have disrupted normal life in Udaipur district of Rajasthan, forcing closure of schools and prompting the administration to alert the Army.

Major lakes like Fatehsagar, Pichola, Swarupsagar and Udaisagar were filled to capacity. Gates of Udaisagar were opended, causing submergence of thousands of acres of land in Dabok and Vallabh Nagar areas of the city, flood control room sources said here on Saturday.

Overflow of water from Govardhansagar lake has led to flood-like situation in Govindnagar, Vasant Vihar, Swami Nagar, Mahavir Nagar and Kardhar Complex areas, they said.

People residing in colonies on the bank of river Ahar have been evacuated and sent to safer places. The district has recorded 111.6 mm of rainfall since Friday, the sources said. Two platoons of RAC have been requisitioned from Jodhpur to help the administration.

A holiday has been declared in schools for today. Roads towards neighbouring Madhya Pradesh were blocked due to traffic jam caused by heavy downpour which was still continuing.
