LONDON: The City of London has signed up Alan Rosling to head its representative office in Mumbai, which will open later this year.

Rosling, who is described by the City of London Corporation as ‘a leading businessman in India’ has been living in Mumbai since 1998 and is Executive Director of Tata Sons Limited. Prior to joining Tata's he was Chairman of the Jardine Matheson Group in India.

While the location of the new Mumbai office has not been decided, Rosling will head the yet-to-be-finalised board and help steer the work of the City of London Corporation.

The Mumbai office will be its first office in India and the third in Asia. The first two are in Beijing and Shanghai.

The City of London is that Square Mile in the heart of the British capital that is also the world’s leading international and financial business centre.

Covering a mile radius around the Bank area and the London Stock Exchange, the City has it's own Corporation which provides local government services within the Square Mile.

“Our job is to support the UK-based financial services industry — and we expect our office in India to become an important channel for two-way contacts and business,” said Michael Snyder, Chairman of Policy & Resources, City of London.

“India's growth is changing the landscape of the world economy and the new Mumbai office — along with Alan Rosling and the Advisory Board — will keep the Square Mile as close as possible to this fast-growing world-class partner,” added Snyder.

The City of London feels Rosling’s extensive experience in India will help them in their current recruitment of the Advisory Board and through it maximise the benefits of the new office for both India and the UK-based financial services industry.

Rosling, who was Special Advisor to Prime Minister John Major and a member of the No 10 Downing
Street Policy Unit and was awarded an OBE in 1994, said he was delighted to have been appointed.

“With the rapid growth of the Indian economy, and its integration with world markets, the long standing links between India and the City of London have revived and developed. There is enormous potential for the City to provide a range of services to Indian companies and financial institutions,” said Rosling.

“Indian businesses are growing domestically, and increasingly overseas too. They are looking to for finance, risk management and advice from the world's best. London is a natural source of all this,” he added.

Snyder said they hoped to promote the City as a location for business representation and investment by Indian companies in the European time zone.

They also hope to facilitate involvement by City firms in the Indian economy by providing support for inward visits to India and identify new market opportunities for City firms, and target the remaining formal or informal barriers to market access for financial and related business services.
