Harsh Mankad served notice to Indian Davis Cup team selectors when he won the $ 25,000 ITF tournament in Manchester to register his maiden victory in a challenger event.

Mankad pulled off a brave 7-6 (7/1) 7-6 (7/4) win against Joshua Goodall of Britain in a nerve-wracking final played on the grasscourts on Sunday. The win earned him 50 points, catapulting him a steep 109 places up to 287th in the lastest rankings released by the ATP.

Kong Linghui awaits fate
China’s Olympic gold medalist Kong Linghui is likely to face heavy sanctions from the country’s sporting authorities after being held by police for crashing his car while drink-driving, Chinese media reported on Monday.

Kong was fined 1800 yuan ($225) and had his license revoked for six months after crashing his Porsche into a taxi in the early hours of Friday morning, a report on the Chinese Table Tennis Association’s (CTA) Web site said. Kong won table tennis gold at Atlanta in 1996 and in Sydney four years later.

London to go over-budget
The cost of building the main stadium for the 2012 Olympic Games in London will go over-budget because of rising energy and construction costs, The Independent newspaper said on Monday.

The cost will be at least 30 million pounds (44 million euros, 56 million dollars) more than expected, the daily said. The 80,000-capacity stadium, to be built in a neglected area of east London, had initially been estimated to cost 250 million pounds but will instead cost 280 million pounds, the newspaper said.

Stalemates all round 
A last-gasp equaliser denied Spain a win over Argentina and a late goal let Germany off the hook in their 3-3 draw with Pakistan while Netherlands drew 1-1 with Australia in the men’s field hockey tournament.

Taeke Taekema scored once from three penalty corner chances for Netherlands and Australia’s Troy Elder drove in a field goal set up by Robbie Hammond.
