Anonymous donations for medical expenses pour in from Bollywood

Mumbai: As blast victims recuperate, Bollywood is doing its bit to ease the pain. Sources at hospitals and in the film industry say at least two top actors are bearing the medical expenses of some of the patients admitted at Nanavati hospital in Vile Parle.

An official at Nanavati told DNA, “The morning after the blasts, we got a call from two stars who expressed a desire to give financial aid to survivors who cannot afford to pay their bills.”

Though both actors requested hospital authorities to keep their names and contributions secret, Bollywood insiders say the joint donations total nearly Rs5 lakh. “The stars are in touch with us and intend to donate as much as required,” the Nanavati official said.

“But they have chosen not to know the names of the people receiving the aid.”

Pahlaj Nihalani, president of the Association of Motion Picture and Television Programme Producers, said, “Bollywood has a heart of gold and is always at the forefront when it comes to helping victims of disasters.”

Rakhi Sawant too has adopted a critically injured man at Cooper hospital. “I have given his family Rs10,000 so far but will contribute as much as required,” she said.
