NEW DELHI: The CPI(M) politburo is meeting here on July 28 and 29 to review the economic and foreign policy issues against the backdrop of hardening Left stand against UPA government’s “pro-US, pro-Israel” policy.

The party is also expecting a written response to their 9-page note on alternate proposals to generate funds to meet social sector projects instead of disinvesting PSUs. The UPA-Left coordination committee scheduled to meet here on July 22 is expected to discuss the Left proposals in detail.

The Left parties on Saturday said the economic policy has “failed” and that they would raise major issues like the agrarian crisis, including suicide by farmers, food crisis, price rise disinvestment and general economic conditions in the country in the ensuing Monsoon Session of Parliament. “Their economic policy has failed. Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar owes us an explanation,” CPI leader in the Lok Sabha Gurudas Dasgupta and party secretary D Raja said.

The politburo meeting in particular will discuss New Delhi’s “Israel ties” in the wake of mounting conflict in West Asia. The party has demanded that India suspend buying arms from Israel. Strongly condemning the Israel’s “sustained attacks” on the Gaza Strip and Beirut, the CPI(M) said Tel Aviv poses a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.
