SRINAGAR: Militants struck again on Wednesday, lobbing a powerful grenade at a bus in the famed resort of Gulmarg, causing injuries to seven tourists.

Viplaw Kumar, senior superintendent of police, Baramulla, said militants lobbed a grenade at the Gulmarg bus stand in the afternoon when tourists were leaving for Srinagar.

The injured have been identified as Virandra Singh of Madhaya Pradesh, KC Bhasin of New Delhi, his wife Uma Bhasin, Shakuntala Devi of Jammu, Sanjay Kumar of Mathura, T Dutta of West Bengal and his wife Chandana Sen.

It was a nightmarish experience for the tourists at Gulmarg after the blast. “I was sitting with my husband in the front seat and there was suddenly a deafening sound. It was followed by heavy smoke and everybody was crying. We were hit by the splinters and started oozing blood,” said Uma Bhasin, one of the injured being treated at the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS).

Sanjay Kumar’s story is no different. He had arrived in Jammu on July 10 to write exams in Jammu. “After completing his exams in Jammu, I decided to visit Vaishno Devi temple. Later I traveled to Srinagar and went to Gulmarg. I was about to leave when there was a blast. I got minor bruises but thank god I am alive,” he said.

Meanwhile, West Bengal tourism minister Manaw Mukherjee who arrived in Srinagar to meet the injured, said the Jammu and Kashmir government needs to do more to restore the confidence of the tourists.

Meanwhile, the J&K police late on Tuesday night killed a top commander of Lashkar-e-Tioba (LeT) and announced Rs five lakh reward for those giving information about a LeT operative Mudasir Gujari, the main brain behind the grenade blasts that left eight persons dead and 36 others injured.

Qari Hanafa alais Abu Qasman, deputy divisional commander of LeT, was killed in an encounter with police at Dayalgam in Anantnag district.
