As angry Shiv Sainik mobs went about attacking BEST buses on Sunday afternoon in protest against the alleged desecration of a Meenatai Thackeray statue, a group of students from the Bahujan Vidyarthi Parishad (BVP), a student union, sprang into action to help the victims.

A 11-year-old student’s life was saved by the union. Khusboo was injured by a stone pelted by Sainiks when passengers of a bus they had stopped were being evacuated to a safe location on LBS Marg in Bhandup around 12.30 p.m

“After sustaining injuries on forehead, Khusboo became unconscious and fell on the road. She was lying unattended. She even fractured her hands in the stampede during the mayhem. We administered first aid and admitted her to the Agarwal Hospital in Mulund,” BVP General Secretary Chandrashekar Kamble said.

Kamble said besides admitting the injured to hospitals, the union had also sought the help of a full-time doctor, Dr Sandeep Mahimkar, to provide first aid to the victims.”

Khusboo, a Std VI student and resident of Shamnagar in Bhandup, was stable, doctors said. “She has been kept under observation for the next 24 hours. She has sustained injuries on her forehead and elbow,” said Dr Vikrant Dhingone, medical officer at Agarwal Hospital.

The BVP had also taken up the task of providing food and essential medicines to the people stranded by the Sena rampage.
