A much-awaited weekend for retailers, hotels/restaurants and multiplex operators went down the drain all over again. This time, however, monsoon was not to be blamed.

The agitation by the Shiv Sena in protest against the desecration of the statue of Meenatai Thackeray, the late wife of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, caused major loss to hotels and restaurants, retail stores and multiplex operators across the city. The loss is estimated to be over Rs200 crore across the three sectors.

Dippender Singh Sachdev, president of Indian Hotels and Restaurants Association (AHAR) estimates industry’s loss to be over Rs 100 crore on Sunday alone. “Weekends are a major draw for hotels and restaurants, which experience 30 to 40 per cent increase in business compared to weekdays.”

Mumbai has over 12,000 restaurants. HA Mishra, MD of Foodesign Hotels & Resorts Systems Pvt Ltd and hospitality consultant said that the A category restaurants had a revenue of about Rs2.5 lakh to Rs3.5 lakh on Sundays. It was between Rs1.5 lakh to Rs1.75 lakh for B and C category restaurants. The non-classified outlets make anything between Rs25,000 to Rs35,000 on Sundays.

“I’m afraid the losses would be much more than the estimated figure of Rs100 crore,” said Mishra. He said, “Considering weekends are big money churners for hotels and restaurants, pre-preparation to the extent of 70 per cent of food that is to be served is done in advance. This by itself will result in a loss of around Rs10 crore - Rs15 crore. Adding to it will be losses due to wastage, perishables, physical damage to the outlet and wages to be paid for that day,” said Mishra.

And with the FIFA World Cup finals being played on Sunday, cancellations of special screenings and events revolving around the football fever could be a further set back.

A food and beverage staff of a five-star hotel in South Mumbai said, “We are going ahead with our plans for the final match screening in our Italian speciality restaurant. We don’t foresee any problems considering that we have a good number of in-house guests staying in the hotels who will avail of the special arrangements for this match.”

Business loss to retailers inside 15 specialised retail spaces in city is estimated to be humongous. On Sundays each mall does a business of around Rs1.5 crore with a majority of it coming from hypermarkets, supermarkets and lifestyle stores in these malls.
