Four employees of Mumbai University have been arrested for inflating marks on a student’s engineering mathematics’ answer sheet for the second semester examination. A case of forgery has been registered against the four with the the Bandra Kurla Complex police station. They are accused of taking Rs 10,000 as an advance to increase the student’s marks from 32 (failed) to 70. An additional Rs 5,000 was to be paid when the job was done.
The arrested officials include two clerks Ashok Gajre and Sunil Gurav, a peon Manoj Jadhav and a cricket coach Chetan Jadhav. Bipin Bihari, additional commissioner of police (west), said, “The complaint was lodged by a university staffer on July 1. We are looking for more persons involved in the racket. Investigations are focused on finding out how long this marks scandal has been going on.”
The university’s Pro-vice Chancellor A D Sawant said, “University officials detected additional moderation on the answer sheet of the student made in green ink, when the regular moderator’s signature and markings were in blue ink. This aroused suspicions. Internal investigations revealed that a temporary staffer, entrusted with the task of delivering answer sheets from one department to another in the Mahatma Phule Examination Centre of the University, was responsible for increasing this student’s marks.” Sawant said that the case was immediately registered with the police.
The timing of the incident is somewhat unfortunate as President A P J Kalam is due to visit the university on July 18 and the authorities would have been happier had there been no scandal.
