The infamous Bollywood-underworld nexus is coming back to haunt the city police. The police are keeping a close watch after learning that Nazim Rizvi, the producer of the Salman-starrer Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, is planning three movies.

Chori Chori… was in news for its alleged underworld links. They are also keeping a watch on the possible underworld money to be used in many forthcoming Hindi movies.

“It’s like old habits die hard. You squeeze them somewhere and the mafia somehow or the other tries to raise its head as land sharks, money launderers and drug peddlers. I’m sure Crime Branch officials are keeping a watch on the mafia,” said Arup Pattnaik, joint commissioner of police, (law and order).

Though Dhananjay Kamlakar, deputy commissioner of police (crime), refused to comment on the new developments, he said the police were keeping a close watch on the funding of the producers.

Crime Branch sources said the police had been keeping an eye on both big and small producers. “When a small-time producer makes big-budget movies, the suspicion increases naturally,” sources said.

Former police commissioner MN Singh, who was instrumental in arresting Rizvi and financier of the movie Bharat Shah for their alleged underworld links, said, “I don't  know if there was any condition when Rizvi was given bail. It’s up to the top-rung police officers to decide whether they should keep a watch on the funding. I have also heard that Bharat Shah also said sometime back he would make a movie on his days in jail. In any case, I had acted on strong evidences.”

Rizvi is reportedly making three movies: Undertrial, Hum Lallan Bol Rahen Hain and another one with Salman Khan, tentatively titled Target. He produced small-budget films like Apaatkaal and Angarvadee. So when he made a big-budget movie like Chori Chori… it raised many eyebrows. Rizvi and Shah had, however, pleaded innocence saying they had no underworld connection and were framed. In fact, the court dropped MCOCA charges against Shah later.

Though the incident has put Shah on the backfoot, he is trying to make a comeback. “He’s concentrating on his diamond company and is planning to return to the silver screen in a big way,” said sources.
