6 houses, livestock swept away in Himachal floods

SHIMLA: At least six houses and some livestock were swept away by the swollen waters of two irrigation canals after a cloudburst triggered flash floods in two villages of Chamba district on Sunday.

Bhadram and Sahu canals had swollen due to the downpour caused by the cloudburst over Naun and Haripur villages early in the morning, Chamba Additional District Magistrate Chaman Singh said.

He said six houses, eight cowsheds, three motorcycles, three cars and five mules were swept away by the strong currents of the swollen canals but there was no report of loss of life due to the flash flood.

The low-lying areas of were inundated and some land was also eroded due to the sudden flow of water, he said.

Chamba-Sahu road had been washed at a few places though the traffic had been restored by clearing the bypass while Bhadram-Tissa road was opened after removing trees and debris left by the flood.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate had rushed to the area and was overseeing relief and rescue works.
