DORTMUND: Brazil striker Ronaldo equalled Gerd Mueller's World Cup finals record of 14 goals on Thursday.

Ronaldo moved alongside the former West Germany striker when he grabbed his second goal of the game to give Brazil a 4-1 lead in their Group F match with Japan.

Earlier, Ronaldo became Brazil's all-time record goalscorer at the World Cup on Thursday, his 13th strike moving him ahead of Pele as he levelled in his country's Group F encounter against Japan, who had taken a shock lead through Keiji Tamada.

Ronaldo's poor form in the opening Group F wins over Croatia and Australia had seen him come in for widespread criticism but he headed in seconds before the break with the final touch of the half.

One more goal at the tournament will mean the 29-year-old goes level with Germany's Gerd Muller, who hit 14 goals across the 1970 and 1974 tournaments.

Just Fontaine netted 13 for France in a single tournament in 1958.

Ronaldo said he was running into form.

“I'm very happy I've made such a significant improvement physically and technically during the competition,” Ronaldo told reporters

“Patience is the key word. I managed to stay calm and patient in all the difficult moments.”
