Rs32cr project will ensure no snapping of lines between ATC, pilots

MUMBAI: Your travel by air is all set to become safer, although you may have to wait till mid-2007. What’s more, flight delays are likely to reduce considerably.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has undertaken a project to connect 80 airports across the country through the Digital Satellite Communication Network (DSCN). With DSCN, there will be no snapping of lines or failure of voice communication system between pilots and the Air Traffic Control (ATC) officials—a major reason for tension in the skies.

By connecting the 80 airports, a centralised network would be formed, AAI Executive Director (Western Region) SR Rao said. “We expect to complete the project in a year’s time,” he said.

This digital satellite communication network will integrate traffic control voice and data, weather data and air-to-ground radio transmissions.  This system was pertinent because airports had started coming up even in remote areas, an airport official said.

“With this project in place, accessibility and vulnerability of equipment and infrastructure in remote areas will not be an issue. In fact, there will be clarity in communication,” the official said.

Improved communication between pilots and ATC officials would ensure safe and timely takeoffs and landings, the official added.

“The project costs Rs32 crore, and the first phase will be completed by August this year and phase II by August 2007,” a senior official involved in the project.

The first phase includes setting up of a main switch at the Delhi airport and a back-up system in Mumbai. In phase II, the 80 airports will be connected.  “The system is highly reliable (99.7 per cent) and economical too,” the official added.
