PATNA: Republican Party of India leader RS Gavai was on Thursday sworn in as the governor of Bihar.

Chief Justice of Patna High Court, JN Bhatt, administered the oath of office and secrecy to Gavai at a function at the Raj Bhavan here.

Gavai's appointment was announced by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam last week.

West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi had taken over the additional charge as Bihar governor following the resignation of Buta Singh in January.

Singh resigned in January in the wake of an adverse Supreme Court judgement that questioned his recommendation to dissolve the state assembly in March 2005.

The swearing-in function was attended by assembly Speaker Udai Narayan Choudhry and legislative council chairman Arun Kumar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, several other ministers and top officials.
