SC has cancelled counselling process for students who had cleared the CBSE-conducted entrance exam for All-India medical/dental seats.
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the counselling process for candidates who had cleared the CBSE-conducted entrance examination for the All-India medical/dental seats. There are 1,654 seats under the all-India quota of medical colleges.
A vacation bench of the apex court, comprising Justices AR Lakshmanan and Altamas Kabir, directed the authorities to start fresh counselling of successful candidates from Monday.
The directions were issued on a petition by a candidate, pointing out that despite qualifying in the entrance examination, the names of 25 students did not appear in the merit list.
The CBSE accepted during the hearing that the names of 25 successful candidates were not included in the merit list due to a technical fault in tabulation.
Kairavi Bharadwaj, the last student counselled, was allotted a seat in Topiwala National Medical College (TNMC), Mumbai on Monday. “I got through Manipal but came here instead. Now, I stand to lose both seats,” said Kairavi, who stood 500th on the merit list, said. The ministry had counselled 500 students thus far.
What upset the students is that the ministry of health and family welfare did not inform anyone until they turned up for counselling from various states. The court has directed the authorities to publish the order of the apex court in newspapers and inform the candidates individually about the order.
Counselling is the process by which candidates are allocated colleges of their choice after they clear the qualifying exam.
