NEW DELHI: The situation at AIIMS is rapidly deteriorating. While on Wednesday the director at AIIMS received a notice asking him to explain why he went public with an internal issue, resident doctors and students are contemplating going on strike again as the government has gone back on the PM’s letter of assurances.

“A letter has been sent to Venugopal (AIIMS director) asking for an explanation. It was wrong on his part to go public and rake up the issue in public,” said health minister Anbumani Ramadoss.

Meanwhile, student representatives have been meeting Oscar Fernandes for the past two days. “We were called by Fernandes who told us he and the prime minister were sympathetic towards medical students. However, he told us that the letter that the PMO had issued was null and void. He specified that those conditions had been given on the negotiation table. Is the government asking us to go back on strike?” asked Safal Singh of MAMC.

The underlying threat from the students is that they can go back on strike. “We are better prepared this time and are coordinating with 18 states. If we strike again, it will be bigger,” said Anand Mishra from AIIMS.

Naseer, who works with Oscar Fernandes and had taken part in the negotiations, clarified the minister’s stand. “Fernandes was involved with the negotiations and wanted to know the status with the students. He also made them meet the Moily Commission to give their recommendations. The minister also ensured that all those doctors who have FIRs lodged against them or were terminated will be taken back and the FIRs withdrawn. However, the PM’s letter is null and void as the doctors did not accept it at that time.”
