NASHIK: Seeta, a young married woman, stands confidently amidst a crowd of young girls who have gathered to appear for the written exams of the Nashik Rural Police recruitment. She stands in the queue with hope and quiet determination in her eyes.

“The khaki uniform represents power and strength and that is what I wish to gain in my life for myself and also to help women who have unnecessarily suffered indignity and abuse,” she said. “I have come here in spite of the opposition of my husband and in laws, but now I have decided that enough is enough and I am not ready to suffer any more. I want to stand on my own and I feel that the police job will empower me,” she added.

Seeta is a representative of the new trend of women joining the force in large numbers. This is also clear from the large number of women who had applied for recruitment. 8583 candidates had applied for the 258 posts in the Nashik Rural police out of which 1500 were women candidates. About 750 women made it to the physical fitness examination round.

Many women who had applied had come from far off areas like Surgana, Peth, Deola, Satana, Akola, Parbhani, Aurangabad, etc.

“This time the competition is tough. Mostly women are eliminated at the fitness round but this time most of them were prepared and finished the round successfully,” says Vaishali Patil, an athlete and a candidate.

The perception of the police force has traditionally been that of a male dominated force but now the picture is changing. Different women have different reasons for treading this challenging path. For some, if selected, the job will earn them and their families their daily bread.

For some it is the career of choice. “My dream is to become a PSI and joining the force will help me achieve my dream,” says Bharati, another sports candidate.

“Apart from being a job, it is also an opportunity to contribute to the society,” feels Manisha.
