The Delhi Government on Wednesday launched an inquiry into an incident wherein a girl student, who scored 97.6 per cent marks in the CBSE class X exams, was denied admission by a top public school.

“We are inquiring into the matter. I have asked officials of the education department to get the details from both the school authorities and the girl,” Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said.

Sixteen-year-old Garima Godar, daughter of a police constable, despite scoring 97.6 per cent in her class X exams, was apparently denied admission by Delhi Public School, Dwarka, for not being able to speak fluent English and due to her social background.

However, the school principal Umat Aluma said Garima, though she had got very good marks in her school exams, could not clear the entrance test and interview for admission in the school.

Lovely said the government will take action against the school if it fails to provide any plausible explanation for why it denied admission to the girl.

The Minister said he has also sought a tape of the TV report that exposed the school’s decision to deny admission to Garima despite her excellent performance in the Board exams.
