They say, where there is a will, there is a way. And, Manoj Inglae, now a middle-aged inmate in Maharashtra's Aurangabad Central Jail, is determined to ensure that people learn it by heart, taking inspiration from his way.

While serving a life term in the Aurangabad Central Jail, Manoj has achieved the rare feat of being the most academically inclined person among all jail inmates, perhaps, around the world.

“During the eight years of my stay in the Central Jail, I earned five diplomas and degrees and one degree in the Open Jail. First, I did a post-graduate diploma in Human Rights, followed by a Bachelor's degree in Law and a post-graduate diploma in Consumer Law. Then I did Master of Arts in Sociology and Master in Social Work degrees. I have also cleared an examination in Hindi language. This year, I appeared for the third year B-Tech Electronics Engineering examinations and have obtained admission in the fourth semester,” said Manoj Ingle.

Before being booked for murder, Manoj was an engineer with the Nagpur Development Authority. He was even recognised as the best talented employee. Following a scuffle over an eve-teasing incident with his sister, he murdered the man who outraged her modesty. The court sentenced him to life. He was sent to Aurangabad's Central Jail. The jail authorities sent him to the Open Jail due to his good conduct.

Manoj appreciates the support given by the jail authorities and intends to serve society after his release. “I am grateful to the jail authorities who supported me throughout. If one has to succeed in life, he has to change his attitude. One can only change his or her thinking through education. I hope to do some good work for society after completing my punishment,” says Manoj.

“Manoj is a hard-working man who efficiently manages farming and his studies. We are proud of him,” said BM Bhosle, jailer of the Open Jail.

With his number of academic degrees, Manoj is only second to an American, who created a world record by obtaining seven degrees in jail. Manoj now wants to break this world record. He has already registered himself for three more courses. The state says it will provide him all possible help to break it.
