LONDON: Sri Lanka, after losing the toss, scored 257 for nine against England in the first one-day international at Lord's here on Saturday.
Dilhara Fernando was 10 not out and Muttiah Muralitharan nought not out.
This match is the first of a five-match series.
England made one change from the two-run defeat by Sri Lanka in the Twenty20 International on Thursday, with Ian Bell replacing the injured Ed Joyce.
Sri Lanka brought in all-rounder Russel Arnold and top-spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan.
Andrew Strauss is leading England in the five-match series in the absence of regular skipper Michael Vaughan and his stand-in Andrew Flintoff.
They are still recovering from injury.
