Former runner-up Mark Philippoussis has been spared the prospect of playing in next week's Wimbledon qualifying tournament after he was awarded a wildcard into the grasscourt grand slam on Friday.

LONDON: Former runner-up Mark Philippoussis has been spared the prospect of playing in next week's Wimbledon qualifying tournament after he was awarded a wildcard into the grasscourt grand slam on Friday.

The Australian thought organisers had slammed the door shut on him after he was left out of the first list of wildcards announced on Monday.

“You've got to earn your wildcards and I've been very fortunate to have a lot and I know that,” the 29-year-old had said earlier in the week at the Stella Artois Championships.

Philippoussis, who was runner up to Roger Federer in 2003, has been struggling with his form all season.

Now ranked 176th in the world, he won back-to-back matches for the first time since last October at this week's Wimbledon warm-up tournament at Queen's Club.

British trio Jamie Delgado, Martin Lee, and Alan Mackin and Romania's Andrei Pavel were the other beneficiaries of wildcards given direct entry into the 128-strong men's draw.

Wimbledon begins on June 26.
