Even as the Navi Mumbai police maintained that Congress leader Pawanraje Nimbalkar was killed over “financial dealings”, the slain leader's family said the murder was an outcome of “political vendetta”.
“This is a political murder and only one person could have benefited from eliminating Pawanraje and it is Padamsinh Patil,” said Nimbalkar's brother-in-law Balaji Patil from Osmanabad. Patil is an MLA from Osmanabad.
“Pawanraje was eliminated to prevent him from contesting the forthcoming elections to the Terna sugar factory,” said Patil, who has been summoned by the Navi Mumbai police to record his statements. Patil said the whole of Osmanabad knows that the only person who stood to gain from the murder was Padamsinh Patil.
“In the wake of the scam at Osmanabad District Cooperative Bank, all members of the director board were barred from contesting polls to cooperative bodies. Every director board member got a stay on the order except for Pawanraje,” said Patil, adding that Pawanraje was to get a stay on the order on June 6, which would have helped him to contest the elections.
“Many people have been questioned and teams have been sent to various places,” said Navi Mumbai police commissioner Vijay Kamble. When asked if Padamsinh Patil has been questioned, Kamble refused to comment.
Patil said the allegation was totally baseless. “I have been helping the police as I want the matter to be solved soon. I didn't have any contact with Pawanraje, but there was no animosity or ill will,” he said.
