DORTMUND: Avery John of Trinidad & Tobago earned the dubious honour of becoming the first player to be sent off at the World Cup when he was dismissed in the Group B match here on Sunday.

Referee Shamsun Maidil from Singapore showed John the red card after he collected a second booking for a two-footed challenge on Swedish midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson in the first minute of the second half.

He had been booked after 15 minutes of the match for a tackle on the same player.

John is automatically suspended for his country's next match, against England in Nuremberg on Thursday.

The sending-off came in the fourth game of the tournament, which kicked off on Friday.
