Militants target cops in Assam, 32 injured in blasts

GUWAHATI: Thirty-two people, including a police constable, were injured as suspected militants made simultaneous attacks in four separate places of Assam targeting police personnel on Thursday night.

Twenty-two persons were injured, 18 of them seriously, when a bomb planted near a police check post at Islampur Chowk in Mangaldoi town of Darrang district, exploded around 8 pm, police said.

The bomb went off just as the police personnel at the check post had left at the end of their duty.

Reports from Dhubri district said an improvised explosive device (IED), planted near Purani police station of Golokganj area, exploded at around the same time injuring four persons including a police constable. Two cattle were also killed.

In the same district an unidentified cyclist hurled an explosive device inside a hardware store on DD Road of the district town injuring the shop assistant, Additional SP, Dhubri, Omar Ali said.

Meanwhile, five persons were injured as the ultras exploded a crude bomb near the Haiborgaon police outpost in Nagaon district causing minor injuries to five persons and damage to a police vehicle parked there.

All the injured had been admitted to hospital.

Police said the identity of the insurgent outfit behind the attackers was yet to be ascertained.
