NEW DELHI: Rahul Mahajan was remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody in Tihar jail on Thursday. Hearing the metropolitan magistrate’s order, Mahajan collapsed in court and had to be taken to the magistrate’s chamber where he was revived with a glass of water.

On the magistrate’s instruction, he was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for a check-up before being taken to jail. He felt weak, so policemen carried him out to the police van.

Following the judicial remand, the defence moved a bail application in the sessions court. It will be heard today.

Earlier, the magistrate rejected the prosecution’s demand for five days more in police custody. “He (Mahajan) has not been cooperating and has been lying,” the counsel said.

But defence counsel Sunil Mittal asserted that Mahajan had been forthcoming with information and had answered all questions put to him by police. “He has told police what happened on June 1 and also specified his relations with Vivek Moitra and the four boys,” he said.

In a statement to a news channel as he was being taken to Tihar, Mahajan proclaimed his innocence. “I have never taken drugs,” he said. “I am being falsely implicated. This is a political conspiracy.”
