LOS ANGELES: Rumoured real-life lovers Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn scored big this weekend as their feuding-couple comedy The Break-Up topped the US and Canada box office, early figures showed on Sunday.

Meanwhile, former US vice president Al Gore's forceful documentary An Inconvenient Truth about global warming cracked the top 10 films despite a limited release in theatres.

Bringing in an estimated 34.4 million dollars, The Break-Up bumped last weekend's leader X-Men: The Last Stand from the top slot, if not exactly matching X-Men's record Memorial Day weekend tally last week of 122.8 million dollars, according to box office tracker, Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.

Aniston and Vaughn, who continue to address questions of their reported relationship with a neither-confirm-nor-deny posture, play a pair of mismatched lovers who want to split from each other but can't bring themselves to give up the condominium they share.

X-Men continued to sell strongly on its second weekend, earning 34.4 million dollars. Coming in third was the animated feature Over the Hedge, with a take of 20.6 million dollars.

Worldwide phenomenom The Da Vinci Code meanwhile slipped to fourth place, with 19.3 million in weekend sales taking its three-week North American total to 171.7 million dollars.

At fifth was the Tom Cruise vehicle Mission Impossible III, with 4.7 million dollars; its total since release reached 122.7 million.

The weekend's top 10 was rounded out by Poseidon (3.4 million dollars), RV (3.3 million), See No Evil (two million); An Inconvenient Truth (1.3 million) and Just My Luck (825,000).
