NAGPUR: The three terrorists killed while attempting to attack the RSS headquarters in the city belonged to "Islamic terrorist organisations", Commissioner of Police, S P S Yadav claimed here on Thursday.

Though the police have failed to establish their links with militant organisations, the trio belonged to Islamic terrorists organisation and had enough explosives and ammunitions to carry out their task for a longer duration, Yadav, while addressing the media, said.

The slain militants were carrying three AK 56 rifles and 120 rounds, including 30 loaded and 90 rounds in magazines. They had brought with them 5.6 kg high explosives which is described as Improvised Explosive Device (IED) but police could not confirm whether it was RDX or identical material, Yadav said.

He said the militants had left Patna a couple of days back and intelligence agencies had alerted all Director Generals of Police and Commissioners about this.

A police team comprising three Sub-Inspectors and five constables was formed and given adquate training to take on the terrorists following this information.

Yadav said the terrorists were moving in a suspicious manner in the vicinity of Hegdewar Bhawan --the RSS headquarters -- in a white Ambassador when the police team confronted the trio.

The policemen found the terrorists' movement suspicious because the occupants of the car with a red beacon light were dressed as Police-Sub Inspectors, Yadav said.

The police have also recovered some diaries from the vehicle and were checking the details of the car, including the original owner on the basis of chasis number.

The registration number of the white ambassador car used by the terrorists was a "fake" one, police said.

"The car had registration number MH20/B/8979 and so the police suspected that the ultras might be from Aurangabad. During the investigations it was revealed that a two-wheeler was registered against the above mentioned number," police sources in Aurangabad said on Thursday night. The two-wheeler is registered in the name of one Amrit Mahajan, a resident of Shivajinagar in the city, police said adding Mahajan had sold the two-wheeler to one Babu Madad, a resident of ST colony.

The motive of the terrorists could be to enter any building near the RSS HQs and create "a hostage like situation", the commissioner of police said.

Yadav also said a hand grenade, which was thrown by the militants, did not explode because the safety pin was not properly opened. 12 other grenades were recovered from them.

To a question, Yadav outrightly rejected VHP leader Praveen Togadia's remarks that the Nagpur incident was a fake police encounter.

The autopsy of the slained terrorists was being done under the supervision of a sub-divisional magistrate and the bodies would be kept for some time, he said.

Meanwhile, Police Sub Inspector Arvind Saraf, who was injured in the encounter, has been kept under observation for next 72 hours, Yadav added.
