Jaya Bachchan resigns as UPFDC chairperson

LUCKNOW: Nearly two months after being disqualified from the Rajya Sabha over the office of profit issue, noted film actress Jaya Bachchan on Wednesday resigned as chairperson of Uttar Pradesh Film Development Corporation.

Her resignation was accepted by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, an official spokesman said here. Jaya was appointed chairperson of the corporation with cabinet minister rank by Yadav on October 10, 2003 soon after he took over the reins of the state.

She had resigned from UPFDC chairpersonship earlier also before being elected to the upper house of Parliament on a Samajwadi Party ticket on July 4, 2004 but was reappointed to the post ten days later.

The noted actress was disqualified from RS on March 16 following a petition before the Election Commission accusing her of holding an office of profit as chairperson of the corporation.
