New Delhi: The BJP has threatened to move a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Mukherjee.

Incensed over the admonition of former Lok Sabha secretary general Subhash Kashyap, who was indicted by the Privileges committee for passing certain derogatory remarks against the Speaker, four of the BJP’s representatives on the Privilege Committee also threatened to quit.

The MPs are Kishan Singh Sangwan, Rajendrasinh Rana, Ananth Kumar and Virendra Kumar.

The BJP also alleged that the final report that was presented to the House was different from the one that has been adopted. However, this was vehemently denied by the government. “It is an absurd charge,” said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunshi.

The government meanwhile stood its ground and accused the BJP of adopting double standards.

Dasmunshi told the media that deputy leader of the BJP V K Malhotra had contacted him on Monday night urging him not to implement that part of the report which had suggested that Kashyap be summoned to the bar of the house and reprimanded.

According to the minister, he had also asked him to review the report. Dasmunshi pointed out that as per rules it was not possible.

When the House met this morning, the BJP appeared determined to thwart the introduction of the resolution. They raised a din and entered the well forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House.

The BJP’s aggressive attitude appeared to find little favour even with its allies with most of the NDA constituents like the JD(U), Shiv Sena and the Akali Dal refusing to join them.

The Speaker at one stage even threatened to resign but was dissuaded from doing so by almost all the parties save the BJP.
