BEIJING: India on Monday launched the first-ever ‘India Festival’ at the elite Peking University here to introduce the country’s unique culture, civilisation and achievements to the new generation of Chinese students. The 10-day event, organised as part of the year-long ‘India-China Friendship Year’ is a little window to India, the Indian Ambassador to China, Nalin Surie said.

Noting that the year 2006 has been designated by the two governments as the ‘India-China Friendship Year,’ Surie said many activities are being planned to mark this special year and to enhance friendship between the two big neighbours. He noted that relations between India and China over the last few years have entered a dynamic phase and they are developing and diversifying. “They have attained a significance that transcends the bilateral”.

“At the people-to-people level there can be seen a new found curiosity about each other. But, we need to take the prevailing curiosity to a higher level of mutual understanding. Universities and academic institutions are a good place to begin this exercise,” the Ambassador noted.

Surie added that the people of the two nations will witness a series of activities, including high-level visits, business seminars, conferences, cultural shows, exhibitions and film festivals.

The India Festival launch ceremony was also attended by the Standing General Secretary of the Peking University, Wu Zhi Pan, Dean of Foreign Languages of the University, Zheng Zhaoxiang, Director of the India Study Centre, Prof. Wang Bangwei and the Deputy Director of the Department of Hindi, Jiang Jikui. Wu, in his speech, expressed Peking University’s noted that the event would provide an opportunity for Chinese students to know more about India.

Young Chinese girls also gave a scintillating performance of Indian classical dances like Kathak and Bharatanatyam.
