CHANDIGARH: Three persons were killed and an equal number injured in separate incidents as heavy rains lashed Haryana and other northern states on Monday.

Those killed were identified as 65-year-old Mahar Singh, his wife Sandoori of Teha village and Jagat Singh, a lineman from Fazilpur village in Sonepat district, a report from Sonepat quoting official sources said.

Mahar Singh and his wife were buried alive when a wall along which they had taken shelter collapsed due to heavy rains. Three other persons were injured when the wall of a plywood factory in Sonepat caved in at Sainipura village.

Meanwhile, Chandigarh and its surrounding areas were lashed by heavy rains.

The city had received about 10mm of rain until this afternoon. The skies cleared up later in the day, but maximum temperature dropped by over seven degrees from the normal range.

The Meterological department said that rains lashed Rohtak (1.2 mm), Hisar (8.2 mm) and Sonepat (20 mm) in Haryana.

Jalandhar, Patiala and Ludhiana had a partially cloudy sky while Nangal Dam area received about 6 mm of rain.

Srinagar had received 1.4 mm of rain until 8:30 this morning while Shimla (40.2 mm) was among other many places in Himachal Pradesh to be lashed by heavy rains.

A MET official attributed the current change in weather to a Western Disturbance, which lies over north Pakistan and neighbourhood as an Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation.

Moderate to rather heavy rain or thunder showers have been forecast at many places in Himacha, while light to moderate rain or thunder showers are likely to occur at a few places in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh over the next two days.

Hailstorm or thunder squall with wind speed exceeding 45 kmph have been forecast at isolated places in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
